A Different Kind Of Normal –  released 30th April 2018

October 2017 Work for my solo album is well underway, with guide versions of all but two tracks already completed. I went through several possible titles before settling on “A Different Kind of Normal” because it describes me perfectly. Because of my conditions (I have Asperger Syndrome and anxiety disorder) I am…well, different! I’ve heard the platitudes that “we’re all on the spectrum” but that’s like saying “we’re all a bit asthmatic” or “we all have days when we get depressed”.

However, I’ve come to realise that my mind is a unique thing and it can produce some fairly interesting songs. So “A Different Kind Of Normal” is definitely going to reflect that. It’s partly folk, with a bit of EM thrown in, and quite a lot of something else entirely!

The Track Listing

I’m not giving too much away at this stage. I haven’t even completely finalised the number of tracks, though I’m hoping for thirteen because its a nice prime number… and I was born on Friday the thirteenth!. I’m planning to include the first song I ever wrote back in 2005, Siren Call, and the Celandine track “Beating the Streetlights Home”. But a lot will be songs that you have yet to hear, including “Apocalypse Dreams,” currently running at around 8 minutes. I also have a quartet of songs I affectionately refer to as the Death Trilogy. Hey, if Douglas Adams could have four books in a trilogy I can have four songs!

November 2017

My crowdfunding campaign for my album went live last Friday and I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed with the support I’ve received so far. But it’s not over yet!  Please take a look at my crowdfunding page “Carys – A Different Kind Of Normal” You can get your hands on a copy of the CD album or download or even book me for a house concert.

February 2018

Ooh, where to start? So much has happened over the last 2 months that I genuinely haven’t had time to think of updating this page, and I don’t know where to start.

So…there are definitely thirteen tracks. 11 of which are written by me, one is not written by me but is still an original song, and one is a cover version. You’re going to have to wait until the CD release to find out what it’s a cover of, but I can give you a clue. If you know what my favourite band was between the ages of 4 and about 25, you can make a guess as to the band!

Recording is going well, though due to bereavement and illness we’re not quite as far on as we’d like to be. But hey, who needs sleep, anyway? Over the next couple of weeks my guest musicians will be joining me in the studio – though not all at once!

Also, after a wonderful successful crowdfunding campaign I find myself spending non-recording evenings knitting scarves…and sewing cards…and writing lyric sheets! I’m really loving this part. I get to give something extra special back, over and above the album.

I’m also planning the running order for my launch gig sets. Friday 27th April at the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket, tickets £5. Please come along if you can, I’ve got Keith Sadler as my first guest and Triangle singing in the second half, not to mention…me! Doors open at 7:30 and the music starts at 8pm. You can get tickets in person from me, via the John Peel Centre, or from the AD music website.
